Our retainer is typically $1,950, and most retainers in this field are non-refundable, so understand what you’re committing to before you sign. We also offer flat-rate pricing: $700 to $1,295 for a written opinion on one or two questioned documents, depending on the scope of the work. For cases involving more documents, additional services such as microscopic examination or courtroom testimony incur additional fees; rates vary accordingly. When comparing experts, ask specifically what’s included in the quoted fee. Scanning, exhibit preparation, and testimony are often billed separately. How many known handwriting samples should I collect before calling?

Gather as many as you can find from a time period similar to that of the questioned document. Letters, checks, signed cards, passports, applications — anything with the person’s genuine signature or handwriting. More samples allow for stronger conclusions. There’s no penalty for bringing too many.  

What’s the difference between a flat-rate fee and an hourly retainer?

A flat-rate fee covers a defined scope of work for a set price, giving you cost certainty upfront. An hourly retainer draws down as work is performed, with the balance replenished if needed for complex cases. For straightforward cases involving one or two documents, flat-rate pricing is often more predictable. Are retainer fees refundable if the case is resolved early?
