The Five Things That Give a Forged Signature Away
A genuine signature is, in a way, a physical recording. Not of what someone intended to write, but of how their body actually moved when they wrote it. The pen speed, the pressure, the muscle memory of a thousand repetitions, all of it ends up in the ink on the page.
When a different body tries to reproduce that recording, the difference shows up in five specific places. These aren’t opinions or interpretations. They’re physical, measurable, and consistent. The Bicycle Analogy
Before I walk through the five red flags, here’s the mental model I use to explain them, because it makes every one of them easier to understand.
Picture riding a bicycle down a dirt road at normal speed. The track you leave behind is smooth, confident, continuous. That’s what a genuine signature looks like under examination. It comes from muscle memory: the same motion repeated so many times that it happens without conscious effort.
Now picture hitting a patch of deep mud. You slow down. You push through it. The track becomes wobbly and uneven, because you’re working against resistance instead of moving freely. In forgery, that resistance is the effort of imitating someone else’s motion while your own muscle memory keeps pulling in a different direction. What gets left in the ink is the story of that struggle.
1. Forger Tremors
A tremor is what happens when the pen moves too slowly. It produces a wobbly, unsteady line, which is the most visible sign that something is wrong.
When you sign your own name, you’ve done it thousands of times. It’s fast. It’s automatic. You could do it half asleep. That’s the smooth bike track. A forger doesn’t have that muscle memory. They’re consciously constructing your signature while their own habits push back against the motion. The result is the wobbly track through mud: hesitant, unsteady, visible under any decent magnification.
2. Unexplained Pen Lifts
A trained examiner can see exactly where a pen left the paper and came back down again. The stroke stops, then starts. You can read it right there on the page.
When you sign your own name, you move through it in one or two fluid passes. A forger tends to work in sections, one piece at a time, like an art project rather than a signature. They pause, reposition, and continue. Each of those stops and starts leaves a mark. It’s the same as picking up the bike and repositioning it in the mud: the break in the track tells the story.
3. Malformed Letters
Everyone forms letters in their own particular way. The proportions, the angles, the small habits that develop over a lifetime of writing. A forger copying my name might shape the “B” in Bart Baggett differently than I do. The overall visual impression might look close, but the internal structure of the letterform won’t match mine.
These differences aren’t always dramatic. Sometimes they’re small. But under examination, malformed letters are a consistent indicator that the writer was consciously constructing rather than executing from memory.
4. Connection Points
This is the one most people never think about, because there’s no reason to. How you transition from one letter to the next, where the pen lifts, where it stays on the paper, the approach angle into each new stroke… all of it happens automatically, below the level of conscious awareness, after years of the same motion.

Each person’s connection habits are essentially unique. A forger who manages to reproduce the general visual shape of a signature reasonably well will still almost always get the connections wrong, because duplicating unconscious movement through conscious effort is nearly impossible. In my experience, the connections give a forger away even when everything else looks convincing.
5. Rhythm
Rhythm is about speed and fluidity together. A genuine signature has a natural pace to it, quick in some places, slightly lighter in others, because it isn’t being thought about. It’s just happening.
A forged signature looks labored. The pressure is more uniform than it should be. The pace is slower and more deliberate than natural writing produces. Back to the bike: a genuine signature is the smooth, free track on dry ground. A forgery is the deep, effortful track through mud. Even without knowing what to look for, most people can sense that something looks off. A trained examiner can tell you exactly why.
What This Means in Practice
These five indicators, tremors, pen lifts, malformed letters, connection anomalies, and disrupted rhythm, are the tools I go to first on any questioned signature. None of them require a leap of faith. They’re observable features of how the pen moved on the page.
Just as you can read the story of a bike ride by looking at the tracks it left behind, a forensic document examiner reads the story of a signature in the marks the pen made on the paper. Most of the time, that story is quite clear.
