In my experience, turnaround time is rarely about how fast I can work. It’s about how complete and organized the evidence is on day one.

If we receive high-quality originals, known comparison samples, and clear case details immediately, we can often complete a case in about a week to a week and a half. Technically, it could be faster.

But that’s not how professional work should be done.

Before any conclusions are written, the evidence has to be labeled, scanned, cataloged, and preserved properly. Exhibits have to be created. Photographs have to be prepared. Every document must be organized so that it can be explained clearly — whether that’s in a written report or inside a courtroom.

Sometimes that preparation alone can involve 15 to 20 staff hours before I even begin the analytical portion.

My direct examination time might be four to six hours. The preparation and organization can take much longer. That’s simply the reality of doing this correctly.

Flat Rate or Hourly? What Miami Attorneys Should Ask

Most forensic experts bill hourly. Rates nationally can range anywhere from $300 to $900 per hour.

Now think about that for a moment.

If every task — including scanning, labeling, organizing, and exhibit preparation — is billed at top expert rates, the cost escalates quickly.

That’s why you should always ask whether the office uses staff for support tasks or whether the expert handles everything personally at a premium rate.

Can a handwriting analysis be completed in a few days?

In rare emergency situations, yes. But professional forensic work should not be rushed unless absolutely necessary.

Does more paperwork mean more time?

Not necessarily. If billing is hourly, time drives cost more than page count. What matters most is organization and clarity of evidence. If there is 35 hours of administration work to organize and scan a box of old diaries, you will be billed accordingly. But, that is admin rates, not $650 / hour expert lab rates.
