How to Choose the Right Handwriting Expert for Your Florida Legal Case

If you’re a Miami attorney — or a client — who needs to hire a forensic handwriting expert, you’ve probably spent some time searching online and come away more confused than when you started. It’s hard to tell who’s actually qualified and who just has a website. So a lot of people do the easy thing. They hire whoever’s local, or whoever’s cheapest.

If your goal is to win, that’s usually the wrong way to choose.

What you actually want is someone with a real courtroom track record, a solid reputation among the attorneys who’ve used them, and genuine time on the witness stand. Nearby and inexpensive are not the same thing as qualified.

What to Look for in a Qualified Expert

I’ve been to court 136 times. Every single time, the judge has said, “Great, he’s qualified — let me hear his opinion.”

I can’t take credit for every verdict. But I do get the calls afterward: attorneys saying, “We won. Thank you for your testimony.” That’s the kind of expert you’re looking for — qualified, articulate, and experienced. Some of the attorneys I work with have never seen me on TV. They just want a conversation, to confirm I’m someone they’d trust in front of a jury.

Sometimes that’s a five-minute call, nothing more. They want to hear the expert speak. I once walked into court and heard opposing counsel’s expert talk for the first time — he stuttered badly the whole way through. Everything was solid on paper. But courtroom presence is its own thing. That’s why an attorney will often want to hear your voice before they commit, just to be sure you’re clear, confident, and able to hold a jury’s attention.

Do You Need the Most Expensive Expert?

Not always. You may not need a $10,000 expert. You may not need anyone to stand in front of a Miami-Dade jury at all — sometimes what you need is a letter to your mortgage company confirming you didn’t take out that loan.

So match the expert to the job. Just don’t pick one on price or proximity alone. Those are the wrong criteria.

Is a Local Expert Better?

There’s one real exception. When the original document sits at a courthouse and has to be examined in person — say, a Broward County contract dispute or a probate matter in Palm Beach — travel costs can add up, and a nearby examiner can make sense.

Even then, I’d put quality ahead of convenience. A local expert may be a familiar face to the judges and clerks. But in the end, the facts of the case are what speak.
